🐧 How to Install Ubuntu: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners






✅ What You’ll Need

Before we begin, make sure you have:

  • A USB flash drive (at least 4GB)

  • A computer with an internet connection

  • A copy of the Ubuntu ISO file (we’ll get that below)

  • Optional: A second device for reading this guide while installing


🔽 Step 1: Download Ubuntu

  1. Go to the official Ubuntu 

  2. Choose the latest LTS (Long Term Support) version — it's stable and ideal for beginners.

  3. Click Download and wait for the ISO file to finish downloading.


💾 Step 2: Create a Bootable USB Drive

Use a tool like:

  • Rufus (Windows)

  • Etcher (Windows, macOS, Linux)

Steps for Rufus (Windows):

  1. Insert your USB drive.

  2. Open Rufus.

  3. Under Boot selection, click SELECT and choose the Ubuntu ISO file.

  4. Keep the rest of the settings as default and click Start.

  5. Wait until it finishes writing the ISO to the USB.


🔁 Step 3: Boot from USB

  1. Plug the USB into the computer where you want to install Ubuntu.

  2. Restart the computer and enter the BIOS/Boot Menu (usually by pressing F2, F10, F12, or ESC during startup).

  3. Select your USB drive from the list to boot into Ubuntu.


🚀 Step 4: Try or Install Ubuntu

Once Ubuntu loads:

  1. Click Install Ubuntu.

  2. Choose your language and click Continue.

  3. Select Normal installation (includes web browser, utilities, etc.) and check Download updates.

  4. Click Continue.


💽 Step 5: Installation Type

You’ll now choose how to install Ubuntu:

  • Erase disk and install Ubuntu: Wipes everything — good for fresh installs.

  • Install alongside Windows: Dual boot, great if you want to keep Windows too.

  • Something else: Advanced option for custom partitions.

  • ⚠️ Tip: Backup your data before proceeding.

Choose the best option for you and click Install Now.


🌍 Step 6: Set Time Zone

Choose your location on the map and click Continue.


👤 Step 7: Create Your Account

Enter:

  • Your name

  • A name for your computer

  • A username and password

Then click Continue.


🕒 Step 8: Wait for Installation to Finish

Ubuntu will now install the system. This might take 10–30 minutes depending on your computer.

Once done, click Restart Now and remove the USB drive when prompted.

You’ve successfully installed Ubuntu on your computer! You can now:

  • Explore the Ubuntu Software Center

  • Customize your desktop
